What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as aluminum extrusions, such as architectural building materials (guardrails) automobile and bicycle parts. What is the difference between cedar and pressure treated materials?

The primary differences between cedar and pressure treated materials are the longevity and stability of the lumber.

Cedar, usually white or western red, is a dense, yet lightweight material with a natural tendency to resist rotting and infestation as long as it is kept above ground contact. While cedar is a more stable material (i.e. amount of warping & twisting) it does not have the longevity of pressure treated.

Pressure-treated lumber, usually southern yellow pine, is a semi-dense, heavyweight material with a combination of chemicals injected into the cells of the lumber during a vacuum process at the mill. This chemical, Micronized Copper Quaternary or MCQ, is environmentally safe and prevents any rotting or infestation from occurring during the life of the lumber. This provides for outstanding durability and longevity in fencing and decking materials.

L&L Rail & Fence, Inc. readily offers both types of materials for any and all of your wood / fencing needs.

What can I expect to happen to my wood fence? In one month? In six months? In one year?

At one month: Your fence will still maintain original "characteristics" with some minor warping. Fence will have possible "checks" in materials that are a natural occurrence and not a structural defect.

At six months: You will notice fading of color, minor shrinkage and some warping of materials. Gates may need to be adjusted. Fence materials will have "dried out".

At one year: By now, fence color has faded, almost all shrinkage and warpage has occurred. Your fence is now "weathered".

How should I care for my wood fence?

At one month: No special care is needed to maintain the appearance of your fence.

At six months: You should apply topical water repellant to enhance the pressure-treatment. Check gate hinges and adjust, if necessary. It is imperative that a water repellant/stain be applied immediately after a fence "dries out". This will dramatically reduce the amount of shrinkage & warpage of materials. Repeat every year thereafter.

At one year: Once a stain/repellant has been applied, no further care is needed to maintain the fence. Gate hardware may need to be checked again. Also, walk fence line and "tighten" any nails that may have been loosened due to warpage/shrinkage.

How much will an average fence cost me?

There is no equation for the "average" fence; each project has its own characteristics that define its cost. L&L Rail & Fence gladly accepts fencing projects of all shapes and sizes.
